Here are some ways to prep and prepare for sustaining life in your aquarium during hurricanes. As we all know it's very stressful when it comes to losing power and having a nice reef aquarium. In this blog we will discuss the key strategies for preparing your aquarium for a hurricane ensuring your aquatic friends can weather the storm just as you do.


1. Prepare for power outages

One of the biggest concerns is during any storm is power outages. aquariums depend on electricity to run all the important filter and pumps that are vital to the eco systems survival. here are some different suggestions that can be used to help keep things in operating fashion.


a. Battery powered air pumps

b. Generator or uninterrupted power supply

c. Manual aeration: taking water from the tank and pouring it back in.



2. Regulate temperature

Maintaining water temperature is crucial if possible since the power is out. Here are some suggestions to consider.


a. Heater backup

b. frozen bottles of water


3. limit feeding

Its a good time to reduce how much you feed your fish. We all know what happens when we over feed when our filters are working imagine when they are not working. rule of thumb would be a pinch of pellet type food every other day.


4. Secure the tank

high winds and flooding is always the things to worry about which can be dangerous if your tank isn't in a secure location. if possible, you would want to move the tank from windows or areas prone to flooding. additionally secure a lid that fits to keep debris out of the tank.


5. Have a backup plan

If you think it's possible and you have to leave, consider holding containers for your prized possessions with proper equipment and water for a few days.


6. After the storm
